Generally, fisheries in developed countries have to face three main constraints (according to the report of the synthesis meeting of September 17th, 1982, ISTPM Technical Reports n° 3 a 1983):- The evolution of marine legislation has just limited their access to a number of areas, forcing them to focus on their own economic area.- The high exploitation level of a number of stocks raises the issue of the limits of their production capacities.- Exploitation costs have strongly increased because of the oil crisis. As regards to this situation, the general concept of resource management, that is to say the passing of a set of measures aiming to protect and keep a good balance of the exploited stocks taking into account the laws of marine ecology and population... |

The distribution and ecology of two species of Strandesia, s. longula Broodbakker, 1983, and S. stocki Broodbakker, 1983, are discussed. Both species are very common in Haiti, and S. longula is also common in the Bahamas. Both are found on some of the Lesser Antilles, and therefore they are assumed to have a much wider distribution. The two species are mostly found in fresh water, but they can tolerate chlorinities up to 3500 mg/l. No preferences concerning other factors could be found. Both species live in wells, pools, and in the underflow of running waters. Differences in carapace length of different populations could not be correlated with any environmental factor measured. These length differences do not appear to be determined genetically. It is most... |

A list of species that are, or probably have to be, assigned to the genus Tanycypris is given. A redescription is given of T. meridana (Furtos, 1936), a species originally described as Herpetocypris, from Yucatan (Mexico). This species was also found in Puerto Rico, two of the Lesser Antilles and two islands off the Venezuelan coast. The species is compared with other species of Tanycypris, with species of the subgenus Acanthocypris of Strandesia s.l., as defined by Broodbakker (1983), and especially with Strandesia venezolana Broodbakker, 1983, which seems to be intermediate between Tanycypris and Acanthocypris. Furthermore, a supplementary diagnosis of the genus Tanycypris is given. Tanycypris appears to be a widespread tropical genus, represented by few... |

The distribution of freshwater Ostracoda in the islands of the West Indies and part of the Venezuelan mainland is discussed. The ostracod fauna of wells and epigean habitats is compared. Some species, e.g. Cypretta spp. are found significantly more often in wells, others are only found in epigean habitats, e.g. Hemicypris spp. and Cypris subglobosa. Some species are found significantly more often in epigean habitats, e.g. Stenocypris major, others seem to have no preference, e.g. Physocypria affinis and Cypridopsis spp. Joint occurrence of Ostracoda and other faunal groups in wells is studied, especially for hadziid amphipods, which are supposed to predate on small crustaceans. There may be some influence of the presence of hadziid amphipods on the... |

Arubolana parvioculata, a new stygobiont species of cirolanid isopod crustaceans, is described from an interstitial habitat near the mouth of an intermittent river, the Rio Secco, Discovery Bay, Jamaica. This is the first subterranean cirolanid from Jamaica. Alltogether, 6 genera of stygobiont cirolanids, with 9 species, are known from 7 islands in the West Indies. The new species has a small and elongate body, which is typical of inhabitants of interstitia. It is also euryhaline. An additional description is given of Arubolana imula Botosaneanu & Stock, 1979, type-species of the genus, based on new specimens from the type-locality. Bermudalana aruboides Bowman & Iliffe, 1983, from caves on the oceanic island Bermuda, is referred to the genus... |

In certain wells on the islands Antigua and Guadeloupe (West Indies), females and males of a new species of Cyclopidae were found, apparently belonging to an undescribed genus, for which the name Hesperocyclops improvisus n. g., n. sp., is proposed. The systematic position of this taxon is near Apocyclops Lindberg, 1942, but there are some morphological distinctions, e.g. in the shape of the genital somite and of the anal operculum in both sexes, in the different reduction of the 4th endopodite in females and males, and in the shape of P5. These developments may be considered an evolutionary step in the direction of the morphology of Haplocyclops Kiefer, 1952 (according to Dussart, 1982, a subgenus of Bryocyclops Kiefer, 1927). |

From the recently discovered mollusc fauna of Winterswijk-Miste (The Netherlands, province of Gelderland) nineteen species of Cancellariidae are described; one of these is supposed to be derived from Chattian sediments. The Miocene (Hemmoorian) age of this fauna is supported by the cancellariid species. Among the eighteen species collected in situ four species and a subspecies appeared to be new, viz. Trigonostoma mistense, T. barnardi, T. lindeni, T. pouwi, and T. geslini josephinae. Another new species, Sveltia gliberti, is described from the Edegem Sands in Belgium. Furthermore, a new subgenus, Misteia, is introduced within the genus Trigonostoma for T. planispirum Nyst (type species), T. mistense sp. nov. and T. mutinense (Foresti) |

A quarterly econometric model of the Hawaii beef production sector is estimated. Energy prices influence the model through Hawaii beef and feed prices which are a function of Mainland-to-Hawaii freight rates. Energy prices also influence the decision of whether to allocate feeder animals to feedlots or pasture. Through simulation, it was found that rapidly increasing energy prices after 1973 resulted in a 22 percent reduction in total Hawaii beef production. The composition of production also changed toward more grain fed and less grass fed beef. Given these results, other state and national beef modelers might find it useful to include energy prices in their models. |

In the appendix to this paper an overview of Michigan economic incentive legislation is presented (MSU Ag Econ Staff paper No. 79-79). This described Michigan's economic incentive program without conducting an analysis of the consequences of the program. The purpose of the following discussion is to analyze the impact of economic incentives, providing some insights into the incidence of benefits and costs resulting from Michigan's economic development program. This discussion is comprised of four parts: 1) The relationship between tax levels, industrial revenue bond financing, and economic growth; 2) A description of industrial revenue bond use on a national level, Michigan's program placed into perspective; 3) Summary and discussion of the results... |

An assessment is presented of the costs and benefits of a scheme in the New England region of New South Wales for the control of footrot in sheep. An ex post evaluation is presented of the operation of the scheme since its inception in 1960 to the present, and also an ex ante appraisal is made of the proposed continuation of the scheme in the future. Data were collected from the implementing agencies and from samples of sheep farmers in the target area and in another area where the disease is endemic. Some coefficients not otherwise available were estimated by a panel of experts by use of a Delphi procedure. Net benefits from the scheme were estimated directly as producers' surpluses less administrative costs, assuming no effects on output prices.... |

The interval measurement approach was used to obtain risk preference measures for 23 Michigan farmers in 1979 and again in 1981. This paper analyzes how risk preferences of the individuals in this group of decision-makers changed over a two year time period. Risk preferences were most stable near typically experienced personal income levels. |
